GRAND MASTER TATSUO SHIMABUKU - CREATOR
Shimabuku was born in Okinawa, Japan on September 19, 1908. He studied karate under many masters including Master Kyan, Senior Instructor of the Shobayashi - Shorin-ryu system, Master Miagi, founder of Goju-ryu, Master Motobu, one of Okinawa's most powerful fighters, and Taira Shinken, the developer of Kobudo Kata (the form of weaponry). By blending these arts together, Master Shimabuku created the art of Isshinryu. In the 1950s a group of American Marines began studying Isshinryu under Master Shimabuku. Don Nagle was one of those men, and he returned to the United States to open the first Isshinryu Dojo in 1957. Master Shimabuku passed away on May 30, 1975. It is our honor and privilege to pass on all of his teachings, while maintaining traditional respect for the past, present, and the future.
